At this workshop, we’ll assist you in completing your;

• FAFSA – FREE APPLICATION FOR STUDENT AID
- Must bring a copy of completed 2008 tax return
- If you were born after January 1, 1986 you will also need to bring one parent
With you and a copy of their 2008 tax return.

• Federal Parent Plus Loan – This loan is available to any parent whose son or daughter was born after January 1, 1986.

• SLM – Sallie Mae Career Training Loan Application

• TFC loan application (Must bring a valid Driver’s License)

The application process takes about 1 hour.

All applicants need to have two complete references available with full name, address and telephone numbers. The references can be anyone; friends, co-workers, neighbors or relatives. References are also required for the Parent Plus, SLM and TFC loan applications.

Many students new to college do not know what it takes to be successful in the college environment. The idea is to provide you with guidelines you can follow which will help you get down to the business of becoming a serious, successful student. Successful students attend classes regularly, exhibit a combination of successful attitudes and behaviors as well as intellectual capacity, and respond to questions by their instructor, even if their attempts are clumsy and difficult. While in class, successful college students are respectful towards others by paying close attention to the discussions as led by their instructor These students realize that an instructor is a professional educator andis dedicated to making material clear and understandable to students. Successful Students plan on being successful – believe in themselves and trust their strengths, abilities, and skills. Your own efforts control your grade, you earn the glory or deserve the blame, you make the choice.

There is much discussion about the dangers of stimulants and some of the concern is warranted. Today, college students across the country rely on stimulants like Concerta and Adderall to increase focus and stave off sleep. Stimulants can also be drugs such as cocaine, crack, amphetamines, methamphetamines, and ice. With stimulant use, the heart begins to beat faster, while blood pressure and metabolism go up. Stimulants are sometimes prescribed by doctors to treat conditions such as asthma, respiratory problems, obesity, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder ADHD, and sleep disorders like narcolepsy. Amphetamines and amphetamine-related drugs are central nervous system stimulants whose actions resemble those of adrenaline, one of the body’s natural hormones. As the name suggests, stimulants increasealertness, attention,and energy, as well as elevate blood pressure and increase heart rate and respiration. As drugs of abuse, stimulants are frequently taken to produce a sense of exhilaration, enhance self esteem, improve mental and physical performance, increase activity, reduce appetite, produce prolonged wakefulness, and to “get high ” They are among the most potent agents of reward and reinforcement that underlie the problem of dependence. When you use stimulants, you’re living on the principle, which is, in fact, shortening your life “.

Long-term studies on the effects of sleeping pills don’t show encouraging results. One major conclusion from all studies is that people that suffer from sleeplessness are better off without sleeping pills than they are with them. The problem is that no sleeping pill remains in the blood all night, impairing consciousness, and then suddenly evaporates at the moment of awakening. sleeping pills suppress the action potentials of a wide variety our brain cells. The psychological effects are to make us sleepy, reduce alertnessand vigilance, slow reaction times and judgment, and impair aspectsof intelligence and memory. While small amounts of these medications can help in a crisis, many older people are taking too many of the prescribed pills for months or years on end or combining them with other medications. The dangers of sleeping pills range from mild and immediate side effects to some potential life threatening and activity limiting effects. Users can get hooked within just two weeks of starting to take the pills, which many people are taking unnecessarily.

Losing Weight Safely Though millions of Americans are dieting at any given time, obesity in this country is on the rise. Overweight people have an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and other illnesses. Excess body weight increases the risk for coronary heart disease. Your doctor or other health worker can help you set sensible goals based on a proper weight for your height, build and age. Fact is, the amount that you reduce in your food intake to lose weight, may be dangerous to your health. The idea is to use up more calories than you eat. Fried foods and fatty desserts can quickly use up a day’s calories. Fad diets aren’t good because they often call for too much or too little of one type of food. Ask Your Doctor or a Health Specialist about Sensible Goals.

Drug abuse is the use of illicit drugs or the abuse of prescription or over-the-counter drugs for purposes other than those for which they are indicated or in a manner or in quantities other than directed. It is an increasing problem in our affluent societies and carries great social and economic costs through its impacts on crime and health. Addiction is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences to the individual who is addicted and to those around them. Note: The distinction between use and abuse is not meant to imply that simple use is benign or that there is any level of drug involvement that is not potentially dangerous. Drug abuse is using drugs in a way that harms you or that leads you to harm others and you can abuse illegal drugs, prescription drugs, or over-the-counter drugs. Nonprescription medicines, such as cough syrups or cold pills, can also be abused.

Internships are work-related professional learning experiences that provide students, new graduates, and career changers with an opportunity to gain important knowledge and skills. Internships can often be the gateway to your future job. Internships, for the most part, are arranged individually. Internships are available but not limited to the fields of audio engineering, film, and Graphic Arts. Internships are generally open to undergraduate students and graduate students; who are currently enrolled in a degree granting institution, have graduated from a degree granting institution in the last six months or having evidence that they have been accepted into a degree-granting post-graduate program within six months. In addition to securing good work experience, students also may be able to gain academic credit and financial compensation albeit modest in size for internships. Internships can be an interesting, challenging, and very rewarding way to learn about a particular business or industry. Employers frequently cite the work experience gained by internships as important in their hiring decisions for college graduates. If you work an internship that is closely related to what you want to do when you graduate, you have almost doubled your chances to get hired.

Whether it’s money to buy a new car , pay for an education, or fund an early retirement, many of the things that we want can end up costing a good deal of money. Saving money is one of those tasks that’s so much easier said than done. Kill your debt first Simply calculating how much you spend each month on your debts will illustrate that eliminating debt is the fastest way to free up money.

We do this is because we really want to earmark that money for the premiums you have to pay and make sure you are planning for them. In order to save money, you need to spend less than you earn. Another trick that makes it easier to save money is to save money towards a specific goal. Try setting up a savings or investment account, and pay the account a set amount of money each month just as you would any other bill. Cutting down on eating out, or eliminating it outright, except for special occasions, can save you a great deal of money. Of course, it will still cost you money to take your lunch, instead of purchasing it at a restaurant, but the cost will only be a fraction of what you are now spending. Think about your priorities, and make cuts you can live with.
